K400 – formulated to ensure pneumatic equipment operates in even the harshest of winters

A Canadian-based provider of heavy equipment repair services reached out to trial Kilfrost’s K400 antifreeze lubricant for pneumatic tools

The company’s team of highly experienced field mechanics work with companies across the heavy construction, mining, power line construction and agricultural sectors – as well as many others – to ensure their vehicles are always in working order.

Facing two months working in the oil sands of Northern Alberta, north of Fort McMurray, the company recognised it needed an antifreeze lubricant which could withstand even the harshest of temperatures.

The average winter daytime temperature was -9°C with average overnight temperatures dipping to -19°C in November and -23°C in December – and this would plunge even lower during a cold snap to -35°C. That’s why the team relied on Kilfrost’s K400 to prevent tools from freezing.

The biggest challenge for the customer was the ability to use air tools in sub-zero temperatures, without them freezing. As this would lead to an abrupt halt to operations.

Previously, they would use a mix of methanol and regular air tool lubricant, which could be corrosive and lead to safety issues. The mix would also not be substantial enough for the tool to avoid freezing and the team would need to warm up and thaw out the machine for periods – which impacted operational timings.

Through the application of Kilfrost K400 to coat the inner workings of machines, the team found that equipment lasted longer before freezing, and rather than having to thaw the machine out they would simply remove the airline and add a few more drops of K400 before free running the tool to coat the internals.

Following the team’s first trial of Kilfrost K400 it has invested in new 1” impact wrenches, knowing that
they will be able to use and maintain the equipment, during winter months. Through the ongoing application of K400 fluid to coat the internals, both pre and post use, the team expect their equipment to have more durability and a longer life expectancy.

Kilfrost K400

  • absorbs four times its own weight in water
  • offers superior anti-wear ability
  • withstands three times as much pressure compared to earlier product versions

The product is adaptable and is used by companies across numerous industries including mining, construction, civil engineering, oil and gas, and quarries to prevent freezing. It absorbs moisture and provides rust and corrosion protection as well as reducing tool wear.
