Heat transfer fluids proven successful in renewable energy

Geothermal heating is a widely recognised renewable energy technology and works on the principle that the ground is essentially a heat store at a stable temperature. Systems can be designed based on this stable temperature to give efficient hot water and heating to domestic homes and commercial buildings. Ground and air are the typical heat sources, but water bodies such as lakes and rivers can also be used. For each system, we have developed a product to support heat transfer.

Ground Source Heat Pump fluid

A Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) system harvests heat from underground and relies on a ground loop – a network of pipes buried in the earth. These pipes contain a heat transfer fluid and absorb the naturally occurring heat stored in the ground. A heat exchanger extracts the heat and transfers it to the heating system for further use.

We have developed a fluid that can be used in these systems to provide the efficient transfer of heat, under low pumping pressure – therefore reducing energy costs. Kilfrost GEO is non-toxic and bio-derived and has been classified as non-hazardous in accordance with CLP/REACH. Unlike Kilfrost GEO, alternative fluids, such as MEG and MPG, as well as some corrosion inhibitor packs, may contain toxic chemicals and could have a negative impact on the environment and wildlife.

In addition, as our fluid can maintain low viscosity even in colder temperatures, the required depth of the pipework can be reduced, which in turn can save on construction costs.

Water Source Heat Pump fluid

A water source heat pump system uses the natural heat that is present in lakes, ponds, rivers, springs or wells. There are two types of systems: closed-loop and open-loop. Go Geothermal offers three technologies to support the water source/ underwater heat exchangers and Kilfrost GEO is the heat transfer fluid of choice for these applications.

Air Source Heat Pump fluid

An Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) transfers heat from outside air. An ASHP uses a refrigerant system involving a compressor and a condenser to absorb at one place and release it to another. These systems need electricity to run but the heat output energy is many times greater than the electrical energy input needed to operate the system.

Kilfrost AIR is the superior heat transfer fluid of choice for this application eliminating challenges previous associated with Air Source Heat Pumps. It has been tested to and exceeds the ASTM D1384-05 corrosion standard at 88°C, providing outstanding protection for pump components.

Superior environmental profile

Our heat transfer fluids can be assured as safe for incidental food and beverage contact through certification by the US NSF organisation. Kilfrost GEO Plus has undergone this certification by the inspection and approval of the individual components of the formulation. This offers additional reassurance if crops are to be propagated or there are animals on the land where the ground source collection pipes are buried.
