Net-zero is not an uncommon phrase in today’s refrigeration industry vocabulary, and many of the sector’s big players, including prominent regulatory bodies, are emphasising the increasing need for sustainable and energy-efficient solutions which both minimise environmental impact and maintain operational efficiency.
So, what are the considerations to achieving this? And how do low viscosity heat transfer fluids (LV HTFs) play their part?
Reducing high global warming potential (GWP)
Refrigeration systems have long relied on primary cooling circuits containing refrigerant gases to transfer heat. While these systems are highly efficient, refrigerants like hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) contribute significantly to near-term warming as greenhouse gases and are associated with high-GWP.
Both the EU’s F-Gas Regulation and the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol aim to phase down the use of high-GWP refrigerants, pushing the industry to adopt low-GWP alternatives.
The role of secondary cooling circuits
The majority of the attention when it comes to these challenges has been focused on refrigerants, but it is essential that we also consider the role of secondary cooling circuits—where low viscosity heat transfer fluids are used.
LV HTFs, such as our Advanced Low Viscosity (ALV), and also our food industry safe - ALVPLUS range, offer lower viscosity in secondary cooling circuits, meaning that pumps, compressors, and other components can circulate the fluid more easily and with less energy consumption, thus playing a vital role in meeting environmental goals.
But, how does this affect equipment?
In addition to energy efficiency, our specialty chemicals contribute to the longevity of refrigeration systems by reducing the strain on your equipment. By minimising mechanical stress, low viscosity heat transfer fluids help reduce the environmental impact associated with the manufacturing, transportation, and disposal of replacement parts. Our products are also formulated with corrosion inhibitors that protect system components from damage, further reducing the likelihood of costly repairs and system downtime.
Using our ALV and ALVPLUS products can lower the resistance in secondary cooling leading to less wear and tear on components such as pumps and compressors.
And, in a world where resource conservation and waste reduction are becoming increasingly important, extending the life of equipment can make a significant contribution to overall sustainability efforts. It’s a win-win solution!
How our range of ALV products can benefit your operations
There are three possible routes the industry could take to reduce their environmental impact, adopting low GWP in primary cooling systems, opting for secondary cooling circuits or, to really optimise on green energy solutions, a blend of both. Our Advanced Low Viscosity fluids play a complementary role by isolating high GWP refrigerants in remotely located primary cooling circuits. For instance, in supermarket refrigeration systems, the primary refrigerant circuit containing potentially hazardous gases like ammonia is kept isolated from the public-facing cooling cabinets through secondary loops using LV HTFs.
Looking to the future of refrigeration
The global push toward net-zero emissions is driving the need for more efficient, sustainable technologies in refrigeration systems, and low viscosity heat transfer fluids represent a key component in the future of green cooling.
Our ALV and ALVPLUS fluids provide a viable solution for operators who are under pressure to comply with regulations, reduce energy costs, and operate systems more efficiently. These fluids help refrigeration systems run smoothly while cutting energy consumption, reducing emissions, and prolonging equipment life—all without sacrificing performance.
By adopting LV HTFs, businesses can reduce their reliance on high-GWP refrigerants, lower their energy costs, and contribute to a more sustainable future for refrigeration systems.
The future of refrigeration is undoubtedly low viscosity, and Kilfrost’s Advanced Low Viscosity fluids are leading the way in creating more efficient, environmentally friendly cooling systems.
