In most frost, snow and ice conditions you typically only have to concern yourself with deicing /anti-icing the mode of transport itself - but not with rail. In the rail industry, there are many considerations when it comes to keeping the fleet moving, there’s the train, the track, the station, the third rail, the overhead lines and not forgetting the points and switches too.

As a pioneer in anti-icing fluid, our Rail Plus is a biodegradable, multi-pronged product that enables Network Rail and the wider rail industry to keep trains running safely during winter conditions in temperatures of -25°C and below.

What is Rail Plus?

Rail Plus, a Kilfrost formula which has undergone rigorous testing, shows a real superiority when it comes to anti-icing situations through its high viscosity.

When applied to pantograph arms as well as points and fluids, the thickened fluid offers protection from frost and freezing precipitation for extended periods.

The fluid also has a great application for electrified third rails, which are used in urban rail and mass transit systems where the terrain may prevent the use of overhead cables. The fluid, which prevents ice from forming and resists snow, hail and rain can ensure that there is continued and ‘good’ contact between the third rail. Without this, electrical arching could occur which could lead to a loss of power to the line.

The product is seen as superior to other commercially available products not just for its reliability in freezing conditions but also because it has been developed to be more environmentally friendly than other anti-icing fluids manufactured. It also actively protects the track and other metal infrastructure from corrosion. And as it’s not a lubricant, it won’t remove, interact or affect any lubricants already in use.

Network Rail, which has the largest third rail network in the world, employs Kilfrost Rail Plus on parts of its third rail network – mostly located in the South East of England.
